Mise-en-scene element #2

Hey Cambridge! I’m excited to share my second post focusing on mise-en-scene. Today I’ll be talking about costume and props and how they help set the mood and show the relationship between the characters in my panther and I film opening.

Planning: Mise-en-Scene (Costume)

Costume will help show the relationship between the two sisters and the difference between settings. Like on the beach, they wear long flowy white dresses. It matches with how relaxed they seem there. They look angelic and happy by the ocean, and in my opinion, I think it fits in perfectly. I think that's the point of those dresses.

When they get back to the house, it changes a bit. The older sister picks plain stuff, neutral colors mostly. Nothing too showy. Simple outfits that go with a quieter feeling, emotional maybe.

The younger one does not switch as much. She might keep the white dress on when she appears in the bedroom scene It feels like she's holding onto that sunny time, even inside now. Not sure if that's exactly it, but it stands out. Those memories linger or something.

As for the friend it's the same as the sister except her shirt is brighter and less neutral compared to the older sister's outfit, she wears jeans and has on brighter accessions.

Planning: Mise-en-Scene (Props & Set Dressing)

Props and set dressing will be used to add meaning to the scenes. In the bedroom, photos of the two sisters will be placed on the wall to show their close bond without dialogue. Personal items in the room will make the setting feel realistic and lived in.

At the beach, props will be minimal, so the focus stays on the characters and their interaction. Items like a digital camera will be used to create a home-video feel and make the moments seem more personal and authentic.
